OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Goodyear is celebrating 100 years of its famous blimps by bringing two of them to the annual Oshkosh fly-in convention.
Officials say the airships will participate in flying activities during the week-long EAA AirVenture event, including both the afternoon and night air shows. When not flying, at least one of the blimps will be parked near the EAA Aviation Museum.
“Goodyear Blimps have been a symbol of aviation innovation and adventure for a century,” said Michael Dougherty, chief pilot for Goodyear Airship Operations, in a news release. “We can’t think of a better place than EAA AirVenture Oshkosh to celebrate our 100-year milestone with aviation enthusiasts from around the world.”
Goodyear began its aviation efforts in 1910, with the creation of an aeronautics department. However, the first Goodyear-branded airships didn’t take flight until 1925 — making this year the blimps’ 100th anniversary.
Goodyear first began participating in EAA AirVenture in 1971, and the company has been a regular visitor to the event since then. Goodyear’s last appearance at the Oshkosh fly-in convention was in 2021.
“There is no aviation event more ‘blimp-worthy’ than EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and to have two of Goodyear’s airships over the grounds will make this year unforgettable,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs.
We have seen the excitement that Goodyear’s presence at Oshkosh has created throughout the years, whether it is flying during the air shows or even parked as a memorable photo opportunity on the grounds.
The 72nd EAA fly-in convention will take place July 21-27 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.
