APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Cashmere Williams admitted shooting another person last summer at an Appleton park, while entering a plea deal in court.
Williams, 17, pleaded no contest to one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide on Monday. In exchange, prosecutors dropped a separate case of battery by a prisoner for an incident at the Outagamie County Jail, although the judge can take that case into account at sentencing.
Before making his plea, Williams confessed to the shooting last July 31 at Erb Park.
“I went to the park with (another person) not knowing that anyone that jumped me at the park the day before would be there. I was just going to hang out with her,” he said. “I brought a gun that time just in case I got jumped again. I came to the park and I seen (the victim) and I got mad, not knowing that he would be there and then my anger just overpowered me and I just shot him.”
The victim was shot in the arm and abdomen, but survived.
Sentencing is set for June 21. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to recommend a sentence of 15-20 years in prison, with the defense recommending eight years. However, Judge Mark McGinnis can sentence Williams to up to 60 years in prison.
In Wisconsin, children ages 10 to 16 facing most homicide-related counts are charged in adult court. McGinnis earlier denied a defense request to have the case moved to juvenile court.
