GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Despite pouring rain, there was no dampening the spirits of the teachers at McAuliffe Elementary in Bellevue on Tuesday.
Nearly 20 Corvettes from Corvettes of the Bay picked a local school, and picked up its teachers to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week.
Instead of their usual lunches, crammed in between classes and classwork, the teachers were riding in style to a free group lunch.
“Just a fun thing to do. Teachers get to go for a ride, maybe it’s car they never rode in, but it’ll be nice,” said Don Vanden Avond, former president of Corvettes of the Bay.
After pickup, the corvettes and the teachers took a very scenic route to nearby Luigi’s Italian Bistro.
Luigi’s usually opens at 3 p.m. on Tuesdays, but they opened early just to host the lunch for these lucky teachers.
But ask some of the teachers, and they might say their students enjoyed it even more.
“The kids absolutely lost their minds. They were like, ‘Oh my gosh, look at these cars!'” laughed Lauren Gervais, a kindergarten teacher at McAuliffe Elementary.
“And my class is specifically obsessed with fancy cars, so they love Lamborghinis and all that. So I was like, if you guys wanna see a real car, go out there and check it out. So they were just so excited, and it was just really cool to see that.”
In order to transport all the teachers, the convoy of Corvettes needed to make 4 trips back and forth to Luigi’s.
The teachers say it’s nice to have a break from their usual hectic days.
“Teaching 4-K, you are in and out, there is not much time to even go to the bathroom. So coming here, sitting down or even having a conversation with Mark in the Corvette for 20 minutes was very special. It was very fun,” said Katie Wavrunek, a McAuliffe 4-K teacher.
For most the teachers, it was their first ride in a Corvette.
And judging by the smiles on their faces, they won’t forget it anytime soon.
