DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Mail carriers hope you’ll leave more than outgoing mail in your box on Saturday.
May 11 is the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
People are encouraged to leave a bag of non-perishable food items near their mailbox for their postal carriers to collect.
The items will be donated to local food pantries.
“Prior to the pandemic, we had about 50,000 pounds [of food collected each year],” said postal carrier Jeremy Beck. “But during the pandemic we didn’t do it; last year was our first year back and we had about 50% less donations.”
The Salvation Army Fox Cities is looking for volunteers to collect bags of donations and take them to the Appleton post office. Sign up here.
In 31 years, Stamp Out Hunger has collected about 2 billion pounds of food.
